Novelist Mark Childress ("Crazy in Alabama," "Georgia Bottoms") happened to be born in Monroeville, Alabama -- the town Harper Lee called Maycomb when she wrote about it in the classic "To Kill a Mockingbird." For years, as a journalist, Childress was told to pursue an interview with the famously reclusive author, who refused all entreaties. The first essay describes the importance of Harper Lee's novel to the Southern fiction of today, and goes a distance toward exploring the question of why Harper Lee prefers to remain a figure of mystery. 2,500 words. This essay is about ten pages if typed, double-spaced, or the length of a typical magazine article. The second essay, about 1,800 words, is adapted from the remarks delivered when Childress received the "Harper Lee Award for Alabama's Distinguished Writer" in 2014.

I loved both these essays, and found Mark Childress' take on Harper Lee to be honest, respectful, and amusing, as he always is. Yes, it's a short book, but it's reasonably priced and offers insight to Miss Lee from a perspective few others have. He is a valuable writer, and particularly welcome among those from Alabama who have chosen to write as well.

Looking for Harper Lee Two Essays eBook Mark Childress Reviews

A sweet tribute to a huge force. How dare a mere, non writer mortal say more. Thank you, Miss Lee.
I grew up very close to where John Steinbeck grew up; I never got to meet him but he has inspired me much like Harper Lee has inspired you. This essay inspires me to want to tell the stories of my childhood.
Great read! Smooth transaction. Highly recommend this seller.
Is there anything noted American author Mark Childress writes that I don't love? No. He was born in the same town as Ms. Lee and his writing has often been compared to hers. He does not disappoint. Looking for smart storytelling? Read Mark Childress's works-there's plenty to choose from.
The reader is given insight into the world of Harper to the degree that anyone can have an idea of her world. I was pleased that she finally wrote to the author and that she acknowledged that she enjoyed his first novel. I am so happy that I read this observation of her life before I read her new and only second book when it is released.
Not much substance here, actually. I expected a whole book of essays, but there were only two and they were short.
There are other more stimulating accounts of Harper Lee and more fulfilling. I have read them and am continuing to do so. The writing quality was fine, however. I do not mean, in any way, to malign Mark Childress as a writer. I hope to get around to reading some of his more substantial work.
This brief book gives, in beautiful language (Childress is himself a novelist), the best insight into Harper Lee as writer and person. Very brief; very much worthwhile.
